What Is Voice Leading?

Two people can play the exact same chords and one sounds amateur, the other professional. Usually the difference is voice leading.

The idea in one sentence

Voice leading is moving each note of a chord the shortest possible distance to the next chord. Instead of jumping every finger to a new root-position shape, you keep any shared notes exactly where they are and nudge the rest by a step or two.

Why it sounds better

Big leaps between root-position chords sound blocky and draw attention to the jumps. When voices move smoothly and hold common tones, the ear hears one flowing texture rather than a series of separate lumps. It also stops chords from muddying each other, because the notes stay in a comfortable register.

How to hear it in the generator

This tool has a Chord voicing switch. Smooth re-voices each chord near the previous one and holds common tones; Blocky stacks everything in root position. Generate the same progression both ways and A/B them — the smooth version is the one that sounds 'produced'. It's the single easiest upgrade to a raw progression.
